What is Sail4Kids?
In its 5th year, the Long Island Sound sailing community, individuals and businesses will come together to raise awareness and funds for Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. The weekend-long event is hosted at American Yacht Club,
Rye
NY
. Sail4Kids has raised $1,000,000 since its inaugural event in 2003. The 2007 goal is to race well past the million dollar mark to support programs and services at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital!
When Is Sail4Kids?
Sail4Kids will kick off in July with the Make a Memory Cruise. Wanting to do something that directly impacted pediatric patients, AYC sailors Daria &
Alex
Blackwell
invited three children who are treated at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, their parents, and patient educator to enjoy a sail onboard their boat, Aleria in 2005. In 2006 they invited sailing friends to join them and led a fleet of 14 yachts from four clubs for a memorable sail with children patients from Maria Fareri Cildren's Hospital. It was such an amazing experience for everyone involved that it has now become an American Yacht Club tradition. This year, they are inviting sailing friends to share their enriching experience by hosting children on their boats as well, on Sunday, July 29 at American Yacht Club. A family style BBQ for sailors, their crew from the hospital and their sponsors is planned after the sail.
American Yacht Club and the neighboring Shenorock Club will be hosting a spectacular live concert with Long Island Sound as the backdrop On September 28th. More than 300 attendees are expected. This will alo be the venue for the annual auction featuring fine art, vacations, and many other valuable items.
The sanctioned Sail4Kids race takes place on Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30, with a post-race party, and awards ceremony on Sunday with the Sail4Kids Cup awarded to first place finishers in all divisions.
